Poison toothpaste, killer cough-syrup, and tainted pet food are the tip of the disgusting iceberg of yuck heading our way from China. Over the past four months, the FDA has rejected 298 shipments from China that included "filthy" fruits, cancer-causing shrimp, and "poisonous" swordfish.
Rejected items often reappear at U.S. ports several times; importers gamble that the FDA, which only inspects 1% of regulated imports, won't catch them in the act. Their slip-ups are detailed in stomach-wrenching refusal reports filed by the FDA.

It's time to buy an Apple computer. Indeed, it's been that time for the past five years, at least, but only now, slowly, are people waking up to this fact. Thanks to Apple's relentless flash -- the John Hodgman ads, the iPods, the iPhones -- its Macintosh business is now in league with that of the biggest PC companies in the world. Everyone who's used it agrees that Leopard, the operating system that Apple released late last month, is to its chief rival, Microsoft's Windows Vista, roughly as Richard Wagner is to Richard Marx. This simple truth is dawning: If we forget about computer-industry network effects and monopolistic business practices, if we forget Apple's various ancient missteps -- if we're going just by what's better -- the ages-old Mac-vs.-PC debate is over. Long over. Yell it from the rooftops: The Mac has won.

For the past two weeks I've written about how the media -- part of the Fear Industrial Complex -- profit by scaring us to death about things that rarely happen, like terrorism, child abductions, and shark attacks.
We do it because we get caught up in the excitement of the story. And for ratings.

Advacned-placement physics students at Broad Run High School may have identified their second asteroid in the belt between Mars and Jupiter. In October, they spotted a yet unidentified object in the belt that the scientific community confirmed to be an asteroid. They asked that it be named Sparta, after the schools mascot, the Spartan. Now known as TO4, the object will be observed for years before it is officially named.
"The last one of us left alive gets to name it," cracked Steven Hanson, one of the students working on the project.
"Theyll probably never call it Sparta, but we will," said teacher Janet Bosch.

“She was using the word ‘like’ all the time. She sounded like a Valley Girl,” said the architect, Andrew, who declined to give his last name because what he did next was illegal.

Thousands of tourists and local residents witnessed a mirage of high clarity lasting for four hours off the shore of Penglai City in east China's Shandong Province on Sunday.
Mists rising on the shore created an image of a city, with modern high-rise buildings, broad city streets and bustling cars as well as crowds of people all clearly visible.
The mirage is formed when moisture in the air becomes warmer than the temperature of sea water, which refracts rays of sunlight to create reflections of the landscape in the sky.

Frequency analysis was used to break encrypted messages.
Arabic mathematicians made tremendous contributions to cryptanalysis — the science of decoding scrambled messages. Their interest stemmed partially from their religion.
The holy Koran contains revelations made by the Prophet Mohammed. The text contained dictated messages that the Prophet had received from the archangel Gabriel. However, these revelations were not necessarily placed in the order in which the Prophet had received them. To deduce the order of the revelations and place them in chronological context, Muslim scholars determined that some passages contained words coined more recently, and some contained words that were older.

During the Civil Rights Era of the 1960s, two men -- Gene Roddenberry and Sherwood Schwartz -- developed TV shows with a similar, fundamental premise: The characters would be a microcosm of the world, and only through cooperation could they overcome their differences. Shwartz marooned his creativity on Gilligan’s Island with seven imbeciles who deserved each other.
Alternately, Star Trek, Roddenberry’s creation, featured a cast with groundbreaking diversity; it confronted relevant social and intellectual issues, and it was set against the vast expanse of the unknown universe, instead of on a confined island.
