The methods used to evaluate the quality of research can be far more accurate and far-reaching. "A common pitfall is that bibliometricians assess the average quality of journals instead of the individual scientific articles."
Furthermore, many scientists publish their articles in popular science magazines rather than in specialist periodicals, something that regular bibliometric methods fail to take into account.
"We know, for example, that 70 per cent of cancer research is published in magazines other than specialist oncology journals."

Sharing research data provides benefit to the general scientific community, but the benefit is less obvious for the investigator who makes his or her data available.
We examined the citation history of 85 cancer microarray clinical trial publications with respect to the availability of their data. The 48% of trials with publicly available microarray data received 85% of the aggregate citations.
