Friday, October 24, 2008, 07:00 PM: Life Extension with Jerry Emanuelson
Jerry will be talking about his 25+ year experience with life extension treatments, including hormone injections, his longevity doctor, what treatments to ask a doctor for, how to find and guide a doctor, an interesting example of the 'medical priesthood vs. empowered patient' conflict as more healthcare treatments are about prevention/enhancement, getting his DNA scanned with deCODEme and opensourcing his genome on the SNPedia.com, and more.

The Fermi Paradox
This is a PAST event. See "Meeting Notes" section for audio, video, documents and other information.
Original event date/time: Friday November 16th, 2007, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm With: David Grinspoon from the Denver Museum of Science And Nature.
Abstract:
For November we are very excited to have David Grinspoon from the Denver Museum of Science and Nature coming to talk with us about the Fermi Paradox!
Why, you may ask, do we at the future salon care about the Fermi Paradox? It's hard to express succinctly, but here goes:
As we look at life on this planet, we see general trends. One of those trends is that we use more and more energy. Eventually, we should use up the energy available on the planet, and go into space to get more. Eventually, we should use up the solar system's energy and expand across the galaxy. But wait -- if some other civilization had done this, they would be here. They would be here already, now. So either we are the first civilazation to exist (at least in this galaxy), or something else happens -- maybe planets with living systems never grow beyond the gravity well of their own planet. Maybe they go into inner space rather than outer space as John Smart describes. Maybe life on other planets develops differently from life on earth -- maybe it doesn't use DNA, or has some other important difference -- but why would that be, if other planets use the same laws of physics as us? Or maybe civilizations destroy themselves with nuclear weapons at some point?
So you can see why, even though SETI has not found extraterrestrial life, the subject of extraterrestrial life has deep and profound connections to our future here on earth. That is why we are discussing it. We expect this to be one of the most thought-provoking discussions ever at the future salon, and we are excited to have David Grinspoon, a world-renown expert on the subject, coming to share his extensive knowledge and insights with us! Make sure you mark your calendar and make it to this event!
